Diesel fuel surrogates (DFSs) are often used in diesel engine experiments and simulations to mimic certain characteristics of real diesel fuel (DF). In this work, the capabilities of ten DFSs in predicting DF properties were evaluated. These properties are volatility, critical properties (Tc, Pc), density, viscosity, heat capacity and thermal conductivity. Volatility was measured using the thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) method. Critical properties of DFSs and DF were estimated using various modeling techniques. Density, viscosity, heat capacity and thermal conductivity of DFSs were obtained from NIST databases, while those of DF were calculated using correlations based on experimental data. It was found that none of these DFSs were able to predict all thermopysical properties of DF. Different DFSs are suggested to predict different properties.
