This presentation summarizes synthesis of novel diacetylene meso-substituted zinc-porphyrins with and without a carboxyl anchoring group. The porphyrin bearing four diacetylene meso-substituents was used in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (BHJ-OSCs), while the one having three diacetylene chains and a carboxyl anchoring group was employed in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Diacetylene meso-substituents, derived from 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid, were subjected to photopolymerize to give polydiacetylene networks that are expected to provide absorption where the porphyrins have limited absorptivity, improved film uniformity and enhanced solubility. The results from cyclic voltammetry revealed that the estimated Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO)-Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) energy levels of the target porphyrins should enable efficient charge transfer in the solar cells. In case of the porphyrin bearing four diacetylene units, photoluminescence and atomic force microscopy were also performed to support this conclusion. The BHJ-OSCs and DSSCs were found to have efficiencies of 0.2% and 2.0%, respectively.
