Triclosan, a common antibacterial agent, is found in many commercial products, and used by consumers daily.  Two derivatives of Triclosan will be synthesized; both derivatives will start with 4-chloro-2-nitrophenyl 4-chlorophenyl ether  which will be modified using acid and dehydration techniques.  The first process will replace the hydroxyl group with a methoxy group and one chlorine molecule will not present in the first derivative.  In the second synthesis, one chlorine will be replaced with (1-bromomethyl) benzene and the second chlorine will not be present in the derivative.  The second derivative will be made in a similar fashion, but using copper lithium reactions to attach the new benzene molecule.  After synthesis, the two derivatives will be tested on bacteria using the Kirby-Bauer approach to determine whether or not the new derivatives are successful at inhibiting bacterial growth.
