Although biological transformations of arsenic are well known, there are few reports of such transformations for the related Group 15 element, antimony. Agrobacterium tumefaciens, has been shown to oxidize Sb(III) to Sb(V) and in an ongoing effort to characterize biological Sb(III) oxidation and to identify the gene(s) responsible for this oxidation, mutants of A. tumefaciens were generated. Slow growth in Sb(III), may be indicative of impaired Sb(III) excretion or oxidation.  The rates of Sb(III) uptake and oxidation were measured in A. tumefaciens mutants exhibiting much slower growth than the wild type in the presence of Sb(III). The mutation(s) will be identified for those transformants which show altered Sb(III) uptake and/or oxidation.
