Light cycle oil (LCO), which accounts for approximately 10 -20 % of FCC products, is a highly interesting blending stock to diesel pool because of the boiling point range similarity. The major disadvantages of LCO, on the other hand, are primarily related to the high content and the structural complexity of mainly bulky multiring polynuclear aromatics. Recently, selective ring opening (SRO) approach has been proposed as an alternative. Yet, none of the studied SRO based catalysts (i.e. zeolites, ordered mesoporous silica, mixed oxides) achieved the great potentials of SRO process, owing to structural instability, diffusion limitations, and fast deactivation. Three different Ni based catalysts were synthesized via newly developed synthesis approach; periodic mesoporous MCM-41 silica via mixed templating approach, Al-MCM-41 via two-step hydrolysis of amorphous silica-alumina, and structured �hierarchical� Beta/MCM-48 using combination of CTAB and Pluronic F 127. It was found that structured Beta/MCM-48 exhibited the best performance in the hydrogenation of naphthalene. The order of catalytic behavior increased as follow; Ni/structured Beta/MCM-48 > Ni/Al-MCM-41 > Ni/MCM-41.
