Click reactions are synthetically powerful tools that use small molecular building blocks to assemble complex molecules and materials via carbon-heteroatom bond formation. Of the reactions that are classified as �Click�, by far the most well recognized and prolific in application is the Cu(I)-catalyzed Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of alkynes and azides to yield 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles (CuAAC; Figure 1). Despite the growing applications of Click Chemistry, and the Huisgen cycloaddition, there are considerably fewer applications of these ideas in the field of inorganic or organometallic chemistry and their corresponding extension to macromolecular and materials synthesis. Numerous examples exist in which an organoazide adds to a metal-bound acetylide and vice versa; and in which isocyanides, isonitriles, nitriles, and carbon disulfide add to a metal azide. Undocumented until our discovery however, is the reaction between a metal-azide and a metal-acetylide; given the moniker �iClick� (Figure 1). This seminar will describe the reaction between Ph3PAuN3 and Ph3PAu-CCPh to give the triazolate bridged 1,5-digold complex, Ph3PAu-triazolate-AuPPh3. Details regarding the selective formation of the 1,5-isomer and potential extension to metallopolymers and materials synthesis will be discussed.
