In their classic, but underappreciated paper, Voudrias and Reinhard (ES&T, 1988, Vol. 22, 1049-1056) determined that the chlorination of drinking water in the presence of bromide results in the formation of oxidant species such as BrCl and H2OBr+. These species are important since their formation often dictates the kinetics of contaminant loss in chlorinated waters. In this presentation, we will illustrate the importance of these reactive oxidants and their iodinated brethren to the halogenation of phenolic compounds such as triclosan and bisphenol A.
