Nanoscale zerovalent iron (NZVI) has quickly moved from laboratory scale feasibility studies to pilot and full scale application at various sites having groundwater contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons.  Moving a subsurface remediation concept such as NZVI from flask to field requires understanding the fundamental behavior of the material's reactivity and physical behavior, empirical relationships to describe the material's behaviors in a poorly characterized heterogeneous systems, and often a little bit of luck.  Paying homage to Martin's many contributions that have moved a technology from the lab to the field, I will present our work to help move NZVI technology from flask to field, and will highlight areas where still requiring improvements including material properties and engineered delivery systems in order to make the technology an effective tool for in situ subsurface remediation of groundwater contamination.
