Water samples were taken from a local water treatment plant which treats the water in a series of processes which includes pre-ozonation, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, intermediate ozonation, biofiltration and chloramination. Water samples were taken before and after pre-ozonation, before and after intermediate ozonation, after biofiltration and after chloramination. This study is focused on effects of treatment process on assimilable organic carbon (AOC) levels across the water treatment plant. AOC is the portion of total organic carbon which can be metabolized rapidly by bacteria and converted in to cell mass. Results showed that preozonation and intermediate ozonation increased the AOC levels significantly while biofiltration and chloramination had little effect on AOC levels. Surprisingly coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation steps reduced the AOC levels significantly.
