The near-ubiquitous antibacterial agent triclosan (5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol) was investigated for conversion to the organic pollutant 2,8-dichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin under a variety of mild chemical conditions. The reactivity of triclosan was probed in conditions of varying inorganic bases and solvents, with a focus on weaker bases and a push toward environmentally-relevant solvent systems. Conversion was also examined in both metal-catalyzed and non-catalytic conditions. Two commercial products containing triclosan were studied for the facility of this transformation. We report our results and discuss the possibility of this transformation in nature.
