Treatability studies are a prerequisite for successful implementation of in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) projects.  In this work, we relocate the proven concept of continuous-flow, sediment column studies to an in situ setting with a device called the �in situ microcosm array� (ISMA). The ISMA consolidates the components of a laboratory column study in a shell that can be deployed in a groundwater monitoring well. We hypothesize that the ISMA will provide information that is more predictive than standard laboratory studies while operating with smaller environmental and cost footprints than a typical field pilot trial.  We are applying this technology to a trichloroethene-contaminated site where persulfate ISCO has been considered as a candidate treatment.  As a baseline for comparison with the ISMA tests, we are conducting laboratory batch and column tests. Results from these datasets will be presented and the benefits and drawbacks of each approach will be discussed.
