To gain more understanding about how mixed microbial communities are  affected by anodic redox potentials in a bioelectrochemical cell (BES),  we monitored system performance and phylogenetic composition in multiple  BESs controlled to three different anodic potentials (-200 mV, -50 mV,  or +100 mV vs SHE) using a potentiostat.  Each BES condition was  evaluated using duplicate systems operated in repeat batch mode and fed  with sucrose minimal media over a three-month period.  The maximum  electric currents were measured as 30 mA with +100 mV, 15 mA with -50  mV, and 5 mA with -200 mV.  These results indicate that anodic  potentials are highly correlated with microbial current production. The  phylogenetic analyses of the anode-associated communities based on 16S  rRNA gene sequencing (using a MOBIO kit) revealed that different types  of microbial communities were enriched under the three set-potential  operations.
