To mitigate the environmental effects of CO2, there is increasing interest in catalytic cycles for use in CO2 activation. The early/late heterobimetallic complex Co(iPr2PNMes)3Zr(THF) has been shown to oxidatively add CO2 across the Co-Zr metal-metal multiple bond, forming the paramagnetic complex (OC)Co(iPr2PNMes)3Co(�-O)Zr(iPr2PNMes); however, this complex has proven to be significantly resistant to attempts to remove the CO and complete the catalytic cycle. The relevant complexes have been synthesized to facilitate study of the excited-state dynamics of the system by ultrafast time-resolved IR spectroscopy. TR-IR separates metal-to-metal and metal-to-ligand charge transfer states that exist in the system and prevent dissociation of the CO; the results of this work should provide guidance in the synthesis of a ligand variant for an effective CO2 activation catalyst.
