The a-amino hydroxamic acids have become workhorse ligands for the synthesis of an intriguing family of metallacrowns.  Metallacrowns are metallamacrocyclic compounds in which metal ions and heteroatoms create a ring structure reminiscent of crown ethers at the molecular core.  Hydroxamic acids lead to metallacrowns with repeating M-N-O motifs.  The a-amino acids produce 15-membered rings with 5 repeats; these rings may encapsulate lanthanide ions, e.g. Gd(III) or Dy(III), in the molecular core.   This group of molecules has been shown to exhibit molecular recognition and single molecule magnetism.  To expand the range of possible structures, electronic features and functionality a generation of a-hydroxy hydroxamic acid ligands is being developed.  Only one report has been made of metallacrowns with a ligand of this type, an L-mandelohydroxamic acid.  The target ligand herein is L-3-phenyllactohydroxamic acid, H3phelaha.   Progress with this ligand and work on new a-amino acid metallacrown ligands will be presented.
