Tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine {P(Py)3} was synthesized via a Grignard reaction, isolated with diethylamine, and purified by flash chromatography in a 54% yield. The ligand was combined with yttrium, iron, and chromium trichlorides generating octahedral M(III) complexes with facial coordination of the P(Py)3 ligand in 47%, 70%, and 82% yields, respectively. Refluxing P(Py)3 with excess selenium in chloroform produced the oxidized SeP(Py)3 in a 93% yield. The oxidation of the ligand did not inhibit formation of M(III) trichloride complexes. The 31P-NMR chemical shift was used to distinguish between interactions at the phosphorus or the pyridyl nitrogen atoms in P(Py)3. Oxidized species were shifted downfield of the free ligand (0.3 ppm) while N-bound metal complexes shifted upfield. Reactions of the M(III) trichloride complexes with 3 eq. of lithium dimethylamide or sodium 2,6-dimethylphenolate were performed in THF yielding the corresponding tris-amide or tris-phenolate complexes in moderate yields.
