Lignin is an important material derived from renewable resources but strategies for chemically modifying it to improve processibility and material properties need to be established. Research on increasing our understanding of lignin reactivity is reported, including reactions with Lewis acids and oxidation catalysts, as well as on developing strategies for tuning properties through grafting or copolymerization with synthetic polymers, ranging from radical to urethane polymerization chemistries. Based on these strategies, it is possible to prepare commodity materials with properties that range from elastomers to thermoplastics based on lignin.
