The project aims to eliminate the formaldehyde emitting crosslinkers in the textile binders. The current technology uses N-methylol acrylamide (NMA) containing binders whose action during the crosslinking process is shown in Figure 1. However, due to the new EU regulations and worldwide chemical safety awarness there is a high demand for formaldehyde free crosslinkers in the textile industry. In this study, new crosslinking monomers as NMA subtitudes were synthesized. These new crosslinkers will not release formaldehyde upon crosslinking. Then the monomers synthesized were incorporated into the binder polymer structure through free radical polymerization and the final product was applied on nonwoven and textiles and the efficiency of the new crosslinkers was evaluated.
