Porous silicon (por-Si) remains an attractive substrate for applications ranging from optoelectronics to chemical sensors.  While there are many functionalization methods currently available, their relative ability to protect the underlying surface is not well documented. Previous work in our lab has explored the bonding of organic monolayers on por-Si via the hydrosilylation of primary olefins. In this project, we have adapted benchtop methodologies to functionalize por-Si using aldehydes. Aliphatic aldehydes provided more durable monolayers than phenyl-terminated coatings. For both olefins and aldehydes, molecules bound via thermal- and microwave-facilitated hydrosilylation pathways resulted in greater yields and exhibited greater stability when exposed to pH 14 solution at room temperature. The thermal hydrosilylation reaction produced monolayers that exhibited the greatest resistance to degradation. Evidence of this initial progress is provided primarily through characterization of surfaces via transmission mode Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).
