A Schiff base ligand derived from hydroxynaphthaldehyde and phenylenediamine, and its platinum(II) complex, have been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods (NMR, UV-Visible and IR) and elemental analysis.  The interaction of the complex with DNA was investigated by absorbance and fluorescence titrations, DNA melting, and gel electrophoresis.  The results show that the complex binds to DNA and is capable of cleaving the DNA duplex at very low concentrations.  The mechanisms of binding and cleavage are being investigated.
