In the liquid phase oxidation of glycerol, Pd-on-Au catalysts were found to be much more active than monometallic Pd and Au catalysts and the catalysis can be regulated by Pd surface coverage on Au core .The EXAFS results have shown that there was no detectable structural or oxidation state change during the reaction for Pd-on-Au catalysts. We hypothesize that metallic Pd is the most active species and Au has a unique ability to stabilize surface Pd atoms in metallic form during the reaction.
