A recent progress in coordination driven self-assembly includes a new class of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with topologies reliably controlled by their structural building blocks, i.e. metal nodes and organic linkers. Interestingly, most of these MOFs are assembled by �one-pot� solvothermal reactions. Although many interesting MOFs have been produced by this simple synthetic route, more sophisticated synthetic strategy is critically needed to produce MOFs with sophisticated topologies and possibly superior functions. We present examples of sequential self-assembly (SSA) used in 2D and 3D MOFs. Using such method, the structural organic linkers can be replaced, added, and eliminated during the multistep SSA. Especially, we demonstrate how a single-crystal to single-crystal bridging linker replacement is possible in extended 2D and 3D MOFs by introducing pillared paddlewheel MOFs into a solution containing dipyridyl linkers. A previously unattainable structure is obtained by this SSA method.
