The main objective of this research is to develop properly design catalytic system for chemical utilization of methane and carbon dioxide by an integrated approach based on theoretical considerations, catalyst synthesis and characterization, as well as its performance in a lab scale reactor. Based on the Density Functional Theory analysis, bifunctional catalytic system has been proposed. It consists of well shaped platinum nanoparticles, that would enhance methane activation at temperatures up to 400�C, supported on faceted ceria nanorods that would enhance carbon dioxide adsorption under reducing conditions. Colloidal tetrahedral platinum nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by wet chemical preparation by carefully adjusting the concentration ratio between the metal precursor and the capping agent. Ceria nanorods that expose more easily reducible (110) and (100) planes are prepared by hydrothermal method. Colloidal nanoparticles were deposited onto support by simple impregnation and in situ reduction. As a first step in a reaction sequence, methane dehydrogenation over different metal cluster shapes is studied in a small lab scale packed bed reactor at normal pressure and temperatures up to 400�C.
