Our research has focused on the synthesis of new gold(III) complexes that could be useful as antitumor agents. Similar platinum(II) complexes show high cytotoxicity, and these Au(III) compounds represent alternative chemotherapy agents. We are particularly interested in the synthesis of new complexes which have a Au(III) center, a cyclometallating ligand, and a tridentate macrocycle. We have used two different cyclometallating ligands, Phpy (2-phenylpyridine) and Bnzq (7,8-benzoquinoline). The compounds [Au(H-Phpy)Cl3] and [Au(H-Bnzq)Cl3] were synthesized by reacting the cyclometallating ligand in ethanol  with an aqueous solution of AuCl3*3H2O (auric acid) . Next, C-H bond activation occurred in a solid state reaction in a muffle furnace to form [Au(Phpy)Cl2] and [Au(Bnzq)Cl2]. Lastly, the macrocycles 1,4,7-triazacyclononane (9N3) or 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane (9S3) were added via two different procedures. Metathesis with hexafluorophosphate resulted in the isolated products, [Au(Phpy)(9N3)](PF6)2 and [Au(Bnzq)(9S3)](PF6)2. The new compounds were characterized by 1H, 13C, and 13C DEPT NMR.
