Group 14 metallacyclopentadienes (metalloles) have been shown to demonstrate an aggregation induced emission (AIE) phenomena. Our group continues to work toward preparing highly emissive 2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl siloles that contain unique functionality at the heteroatom with the aim to prepare metalloles that display unusual photophysical properties. We have prepared several new substrates that are suitable for practical applications such as labeling biological molecules, fabrication of organic-based LEDs, sensors, and optoelectronic devices. Progress and results toward synthesizing novel metalloles will be presented.
