Metal-organic frameworks consist of metal ions connected by organic ligands into 1D chains, or 2D and 3D polymeric networks. The sorption properties of porous metal-organic frameworks are of interest due to their potential use in separating small molecules and catalysis. Improved understanding of the sorption properties of these materials with a wide range of guest molecules is needed for these applications. Sorption studies with small organic molecules have been carried out in the known cobalt 4, 4?- bipyridine bilayer framework. A new cobalt 4, 4?- bipyridine infinite 1D chain structure that forms as a side product during bilayer production has been characterized and methods for controlling the formation of either material developed.
