Magnetic characterization from 0.4 K to 1000 K temperature range has proven uniquely qualified to follow reaction progress and distinguish sizes of Nickel particles generated. Infusion of metallic nano-particles into environmentally robust, stable ceramic host lattices could impact various energy sector technologies, from oxide/hydride ion conduction fuel cells to heterogeneous catalysis. A key development is reducing cost for large scale production of these materials. Adding small amount of NiO as sintering aid lowers temperature for rapid diffusion in bulk 10% Yttria stabilized Zirconia (10YSZ), enables synthesis of perovskite barium zirconate (BZO) compounds and helps stabilize cubic phase Zirconia under 10 nm particle size. Magnetic analysis will quantify Ni2+ ion solubility limits, monitor rate of reduction and characterize the nature of metallic nano-particles. Super-paramagnetic properties confirm synthesis techniques that yield smallest (under 10 nm) Ni particles. The temperature and DC field dependence of low frequency SQUID based AC susceptibility response will establish particle size distribution on the bulk scale.
