Metal-based catalysts have proven to be particularly useful in many pharmaceutical and industrial processes.  More recently, metal-based catalysts have been investigated as mimics of enzymatic functions.  In particular, we are investigating catalysts having superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity.  Both electronic and structural factors can influence the reactivity of these SOD mimics.  These factors are being investigated using a systematic modification of the ligand environment.  A variety of ligands were prepared using simple condensation reactions.  This method allowed for the preparation of a ligand library with both electronic and structural diversity. These ligands were then used to prepare manganese complexes having superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. The synthesis, characterization, and SOD activity of the manganese complexes will be presented. Comparison of different electronic and structural features will be discussed.
