We adapted a literature synthesis of an Er26 compound to the ionic liquid ethylammonium nitrate (EAN). EAN's unique solubility properties lead to different solubility of both products and reactants, and thus may lead to new compounds.  Erbium oxide, silver iodide, and isonicotinic acid were heated in EAN in an acid digestion bomb. Elemental analysis of the resulting pink crystals indicates that the compound is different from that of the literature reaction. Single crystal X-ray analysis of these crystals will be presented.   In a second reaction, manganese (II) acetate, neodymium nitrate and excess benzoic acid were heated in EAN on the bench-top. A microcrystalline brown Mn (III) metal-organic compound containing benzoate was produced. CHN analysis of the product indicates that the new Mn (III) metal aggregate is different from literature and could be novel. In both reactions, the water content of the EAN proved pivotal in the successful syntheses.
