The polymerization of alkenes and dienes has been examined with a variety of different cationic (allyl)Ni(II) compounds. However, limited progress has been made towards the living polymerization of dienes and alkenes as well as copolymerization of these monomers with polar monomers. We are interested in exploring these avenues by synthesizing new Ni(II) complexes containing bulky biaryl phosphine ligands. Nickel complexes containing bulky dialkyl biaryl phosphine ligands have been synthesized. The lower pendent ring of the biaryl moiety exhibits weak coordination to the metal center. Variations of the alkyl groups on phosphorous and the substituents on the biaryl ring have been explored to investigate the hemilability of the pendent arene group. These changes will impact the electronics and sterics at the metal center and thus the reactivity.  The preparation, characterization, as well as reactivity for this library of Ni(II) complexes is discussed.
