Pyridyl hydrazones and polypyridines are well known to spontaneously self-assemble in the presence of transition metal ions. Verdazyls are free radicals that can coordinate metals analogously to pyridine and, unlike typical free radicals; they are stable and can be isolated in ambient conditions. Suitable pyridyl substituted verdazyls would thus be expected to self-assemble and form a metal cage with the metal cations being present. We report progress toward the synthesis of a pyridyl verdazyl ligand with two binding sites for metal ions. By binding two separate metal ions we expect the structure will self-assemble to form complex structures with up to 8 verdazyls together in a simple grid type species.
