We have investigated the structures and properties of several closely related copper(I) complexes of tridentate heteroaromatic-imine and heteroaromatic-amine ligands. Small changes in the ligand framework resulted in solid state structures of different nuclearities and ligand binding motifs. NMR, mass spectroscopic and electrochemical analyses were used to gain insights into the structure of these complexes in solution.The use of these copper(I) complexes in mediating the controlled radical polymerization of styrene was explored, and correlations between the properties of complexes and their efficiencies in mediating ATRP are presented.
