A solution-phase synthetic method has been developed for the formation of well-defined and shape-controlled SnSe nanocrystals (NCs).  SnSe in the Pnma structure was synthesized at 180 �C from stoichiometric amounts of Sn(II)/(IV) salts and di-tert-butyl diselenide in a fatty amine that serves both as the coordinating ligand and reaction solvent.  The presence of secondary ligands and the addition of hexamethyldisilazane reproducibly shaped the resulting NCs in different ways.  Quantitative precursor conversion kinetics were probed in an effort to study the effects of ligand choice on the nucleation, growth, and overall morphology of the resulting NCs.  The influence of the shape and size of the SnSe NCs on the optoelectronic properties was also explored.
