Chelating palladium(II)-bis-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes have been shown to be highly active catalysts for the CH activation of methane in trifluoroacetic acid. Due to their high stability they are promising candidates for the selective functionalization of higher alkanes like propane. We would like to present our results on the influences of ligand, counterions and oxidant on the regio- and chemoselectivity and the catalytic activity. Experiment and theory (DFT calculations) have been combined in order to gain insight into mechanistic details.
