The synthesis of new C-H activated ruthenium catalysts for Z-selective olefin metathesis is described. Mechanistic studies conducted on these catalysts have provided insight into the factors governing catalyst activity and selectivity. For instance, catalyst initiation is shown to be highly dependent on the steric and electronic nature of the X-type ligand as well as its coordination mode (e.g. bidentate vs. monodentate). This knowledge has led to the development of improved catalysts that are capable of ca. 1000 turnovers in a variety of cross-metathesis reactions, while displaying excellent selectivity for the Z-olefin.
