One of the most widely used reactions is the Sonogashira coupling of aryl halides with acetylenes, which is catalyzed by a Pd(0)/Cu(I) system. However, detailed mechanistic studies remain scarce due to complicating factors in the homogeneous phase, such as aggregation.Here, we simplify mechanistic investigations by binding the metal complexes to silica with chelate phosphine linkers incorporating ethoxysilane functions. A protocol will be presented that allows mechanistic analyses, for example by three-phase tests.For the characterization and in situ measurements of the amorphous solid materials, we apply classical solid-state CP/MAS NMR and HRMAS NMR spectroscopy of slurries (Chem. Commun. 2011 , 47, 2059). New insights concerning the synthesis, immobilization and characterization of Pd(0)/Cu(I) Sonogashira catalyst systems will be communicated. Recyclable catalysts with record activities and lifetimes will also be presented.
