To address the need for neglected disease drug-lead candidates Distributed Drug Discovery (D3) capitalizes on the powerful potential that comes from linking, in a world-wide distributed and open-access framework, educational resources in synthetic, computational and biological chemistry. D3 has already created and demonstrated simple synthetic procedures and equipment to enable students globally to reproducibly prepare large numbers of new neglected disease drug-lead candidates. Through Collaborative Drug Discovery (CDD) it supplies computational chemists with large D3 virtual catalogs of compounds based on these procedures. From these catalogs they can identify molecules to test and refine models, with high confidence that selected molecules can be made and follow-up analog work performed. If the computational analysis process can also be incorporated into an educational format, large distributed resources linking synthesis and computation will become available, educating the next generation of drug discovery scientists and harnessing the expertise of synthetic and computational chemists across the world.
