Mentoring is a 'how to' responsibility for experienced individuals.  Educators advise students, but mentoring goes beyond advice.  'Older' colleagues impart wisdom, but mentoring is not a philosophical discourse.  Examples of effective mentoring will be presented from case histories of high school and undergraduate students involved in research, from the professional preparation of graduate students and postdoctoral associates, and from the experiences of faculty who have attended workshops based on mentoring.  There are many experiences that have had little or no impact, but there are many others that have changed the lives and fortunes of those involved.  This presentation will focus on the latter.
