Numerous diagnostic tools have been developed in our laboratory during the past decade to study decomposition and combustion of energetic ionic liquids.  These include confined rapid thermolysis of sub-milligram quantities at heating rates on the order of 2,000 K/s coupled to rapid-scan FTIR spectroscopy and time-of-flight mass spectrometry of the evolved gases.  In complementary experiments, the larger molecular weight species are condensed out and the residue of the thermolyzed materials are collected; it is then examined using standard KBr pellets and FTIR transmission spectroscopy. The overall ignition and combustion behaviors of energetic ionic liquids are examined by using high-pressure vessels with optical access, coupled with high-speed video camera for capturing and analyzing the liquid- and gas-phase processes, and coupled with coated fine-wire thermocouples for measuring the temperature in gas and liquid phases. In this presentation, our recent work on the decomposition and combustion of liquid mixtures of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine [TMEDA, (CH3)2NCH2CH2N(CH3)2] and HNO3 will be discussed, as well as the decomposition of tetrazolium-based ionic compounds
