The removal of ions from aqueous solutions is important for applications in water treatment and environmental remediation. An organic polymer-supported reagent has been developed for the removal of silicate from water. The trimethylammonium ion ligand is immobilized onto polystyrene beads and heptamolybdate is bound as its counterion. Contacting the resin with a solution of 20 ppm silicate at pH 7 removes >90% of the silicate. Sorption is unaffected by chloride, sulfate, and nitrate ions in the solution. The selectivity for the silicate is due to a reaction between the silicate and molybdate to form a polyanionic silicomolybdate Keggin structure. With regards to ion-selective inorganic polymers, methods are being developed to modify hydroxyapatite (HAP) for targeted metal ion separations by incorporating organic ligands. Initial results will be presented which show the formation of a mixed organic � inorganic hybrid between HAP and 1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid.
