We are using plasma polymerization, a technique for creating conformal coatings, to design and optimize new solid electrolyte films for microscale batteries.  Next generation microbatteries will require 3-dimensional micro-architectured electrodes with microscale structure in order to contribute reasonable rates along with reasonable capacities.   Paramount to the function of these new high surface-area 3D battery architectures is a solid electrolyte coating, which must be deposited conformally by non-directional methods.  We chose the ion-conducting polymer polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a model solid electrolyte. Reaction conditions for plasma-phase deposition of PEO-like films are explored via XPS, and a broad range of chemical compositions can be produced.  These films readily intercalate lithium ions from solution, and impedance spectroscopy shows ionic conductivities sufficient for microbattery applications.  The films are the first electrolytes to be fabricated by non-directional techniques, and allow for the construction of complete 3D batteries.
