Nanostructured SnO2 electrodes exhibit excessive capacity for lithium due to interfacial  charging at the phase boundaries, resulting in discharge capacities as  high as 1750 mAh/g compared to the theoretical value based on alloying  of 781 mAh/g. It has been demonstrated by our lab that this phenomenon  is due to the high surface area of the electrode, which can be removed  by annealing at 500 C. Such annealing causes the nanostructure to  coalesce, reducing the surface area and quenching the potential for  interfacial storage, thus demonstrating the important of high surface  area in nanostructured electrodes. This phenomenon presents interesting  applications in high-capacity electrodes for lithium battery systems.  Galvanostatic cycling and intermittent  titration will be used to  discuss interfacial charging and the diffusion of lithium into the  electrode material before and after annealing.
