Secondary interactions such as hydrogen bonding have been proposed to play one of several roles in modulating reactivity in metalloenzymes. These roles include the ability to utilize well-positioned networks of hydrogen bonding groups to bind, orient, and activate substrates at an enzyme active site, or to stabilize a transition state.  Our group has begun to investigate the preparation of ligand constructs whose substrate-hydrogen-bonding interactions are positioned at well-defined distances from metal centers to interact in a substrate-specific manner. These ligand architectures are being examined as potential biomimetic systems for various metalloenzymes.  New N-donor ligands that include directed hydrogen bonding functionalities, and their corresponding metal complexes, will be presented.  The effects of these hydrogen bonding groups on influencing primary coordination geometry, metal redox character, as well as substrate activation and reactivity will be presented.  The strength and persistence of the formed hydrogen-bond adducts will also be discussed.
