The YA3/M reduction system where A = N(SiMe3)2 and M = K in the presence of N2 has provided (N2)2-, (N2)3-, and (N2H2)2- complexes of Y3+ as well as complexes of the metalated bis(trimethylsilyl)amide ligand, i.e. [N(SiMe3)(SiMe2CH2)]2-. The reactivity of these Y3+ species has been explored and will be presented, as well as reactions of solutions containing Y2+ generated from Y[N(SiMe3)2]3/K in the absence of N2 at low temperature. Reactions starting with Y3+ precursors have led to the oxide-bridged and cationic bis(trimethylsilyl)amidoyttrium complexes, {[(Me3Si)2N]2(THF)Y}2(�-O) and{[(Me3Si)2N]2(THF)3Y}[BPh4], respectively, that are common classes of rare earth compounds. Reduction of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl forms the TEMPO anion complex, [(Me3Si)2N]2(THF)Y(TEMPO). The in situ reactions of Y2+ have led to unusual examples of C-O cleavage with both DME and 18-crown-6 and conversion of CS2 to trithiocarbonate, (CS3)2-.
