Nanoparticles are a rapidly growing field in the scientific community. These particles have the potential to deliver drugs, enhance magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or even detect proteins due to their size. Conjugating these nanoparticles to proteins by exploiting both of their functional groups is the first step to monitor their interactions. One of the problems, however, is in designing a conjugation protocol that leaves the protein active for further studies. When a conjugation study is optimized, capillary electrophoresis is used to observe the mobility shifts of iron oxide nanoparticles bound to IgG. In addition, successfully conjugated particles were then incubated with Anti-IgG to determine if the IgG was properly oriented for other applications. Through this, it was determined that the IgG remains active after conjugation and that this platform can be applied to determining the conjugation efficiency of active protein on nanoparticle surfaces.
