We have investigated the use of a novel cyclen-substituted macrocycle in ion chromatographic separations of transition metal cations.  Specifically, a chromatographic column containing the cyclen-resorcinarene (cyclenbowl) macrocycle has proven to be an effective concentrator of Cu2+ . This feature provides an opportunity to fill a current need in analytical chemistry, namely to selectively preconcentrate transition metals in a matrix of other ions. We have found that the cyclenbowl column can preconcentrate transition metals at concentrations in the parts per trillion (ppt) range. After the metals have been retained on the concentrator column, an increase in the nitric acid eluent concentration displaces them from the cyclenbowl ligand. The simplicity of this method makes the cyclenbowl column a powerful contender to current, more complicated methods of transition metal concentration in ion chromatography.
