The newly emerging solvency of cellulose and related polysaccharides invites greater emphasis on opportunities for engineering properties and shapes of regenerated products. Reactions in homogeneous and semi-homogeneous phase, and regenerations from high or low solution concentrations, with high or low molecular weights, all offer opportunities for targeting properties and shapes of cellulose regenerates. This talk will review the regeneration of fibers from liquid crystalline state and of (activated or pristine) hydrogels from dilute solution state, and of fully and partially-modified cellulose derivatives. Strength parameters of fibers and hydrogels, and thermal parameters of internally plasticized esters have been examined in relation to solution state and molecular weight parameters.
