In the wood processing industry, components are released into the process water during the cellulose recovery operations, including poly-, oligo-, and monosaccharides, extractives, and lignin. Recovery of these hydrolysate fractions, optional modification and subsequent utilization of dissolved and suspended components are cornerstone activities in the biorefinery concept and are gaining renewed and increasing interest world-wide following an intensified search for renewable resources.  Material utilization of the hydrolysate non-cellulosic polysaccharides (NCPs) released from the lignocellulosic feedstock stands out as an option of great potential. This talk will address our recent progress in valorization of wood hydrolysate fractions as material resources in the design of bulk and added value material applications.
