The formulation of products from green materials is becoming an increasingly acknowledged alternative for future material production in a more sustainable society. The use of renewable resources for the production of sustainable packaging materials has recently received increased interest.  Nanocellulose is one of these new renewable alternatives and refers to nano-sized fibrils disintegrated from their plant cell walls.Nanocellulose films and coatings were prepared using different techniques and characterized in terms of gas barrier, optical and mechanical properties. The surface characteristics of the nanofibrils were shown to a have a significant effect on the investigated film properties.  At low relative humidity (RH), the nanocellulose films and coatings showed outstanding oxygen permeability. At higher RH's, the oxygen permeability increased exponentially due to the hygroscopic nature of nanocellulose. This problem was addressed by chemical modification of the nanocellulose films or by the incorporation of nanoclays prior to the film formation.
