Bamboo is abundant, inexpensive, and readily available in China.  Six different types of bamboo fibers with different sizes and shapes were investigated for their effects in reinforcing unsaturated polyester composites.  It was found that the length and orientation of fibers had significant impacts on the mechanical properties of the resulting bamboo-UPE composites.  The unidirectional orientation of long bamboo fibers resulted in the highest tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus of elasticity.  The treatment of bamboo fibers with a combination of 1,6-diisocyanatohexane and 2-hydroxylethyl acrylate significantly increased the tensile strength, flexural strength, and water resistance of the resulting bamboo-UPE composites.  The mechanism of improving the interfacial adhesion will be presented.
