For a number of degree programs in engineering, only one semester of chemistry is required. The construction of a course that meets the needs of these students requires topics from both semesters of the traditional full-year general chemistry course be constructed. In addition to this chemistry content requirement, the role of chemistry in the engineering majors whose students take the course can be made quite explicit. This course has been taught for many years, and data from student performances on exams reveal strengths and weaknesses of the approach. This data can be viewed in terms of formative asessment from student response systems as well, as will be noted in this presentation.
